Equity market closes week negative with 0.05% loss September 14, 2020

Equity trading on the local bourse finished last week on the downside as the NSE All-Share Index and market capitalisation depreciated by 0.05 per cent to close the week at 25,591.95 and N13.35tn respectively.

All other indices finished lower with the exception of NSE Premium, NSE Lotus II, and NSE Industrial Goods, which appreciated by 0.53 per cent, 0.14 per cent and 0.35 per cent respectively while NSE ASeM Index closed flat

A total turnover of 1.23bn shares worth N10.84bn in 19,529 deals were traded last week by investors on the floor of the exchange, in contrast to a total of 2.21bn shares valued at N10.96bn that exchanged hands the previous week in 18,013 deals.

The financial services industry (measured by volume) led the activity chart with 980.48m shares valued at N6.99bn traded in 11,634 deals; thus contributing 79.99 per cent and 64.44 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

The conglomerate industry followed with 59.76m shares worth N72.46m in 550 deals. The third place was the consumer goods industry, with a turnover of 58.87 million shares worth N1.35bn in 2,862 deals.

Trading in the top three equities namely Custodian Investment Plc, Zenith Bank Plc and United Bank for Africa Plc. (measured by volume) accounted for 404.17m shares worth N3.85bn in 3,910 deals, contributing 32.97 per cent and 35.48 per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

Twenty-three equities appreciated in price during the week. This is lower than 41 equities in the previous week.

Thirty-eight equities depreciated in price, higher than 19 equities in the previous week, while 102 equities remained unchanged, lower than 103 equities recorded in the previous week.

A total of 54,457 units valued at N283.94m were traded last week in 18 deals compared with a total of 126,119 units valued at N655.92m transacted the previous week in 36 deals.

A total of 7,125 units valued at N7.76m were traded last week in 15 deals compared with a total of 1,016 units valued at N1.09m transacted the previous week in eight deals.
