In a courtroom scene laced with emotions, the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, found himself in tears on Thursday as the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory adjourned his arraignment to August 23, 2023. The scheduled arraignment, originally set for Thursday, was thwarted by the absence of some co-defendants named in the charges.
Present in court, Emefiele faced the prospect of being arraigned alongside Sa’adatu Yaro, a female CBN employee, and her company, April 16 Investment Limited. The charges encompass 20 counts related to procurement fraud, conspiracy, and conferring corrupt advantages.
Earlier in July, Emefiele was arraigned on separate charges involving the “illegal possession” of firearms at a federal high court in Ikoyi. Granted bail at N20 million, he was placed in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service pending the fulfillment of bail conditions. However, a dispute arose between the Department of State Services (DSS) and prison officials over his custody.
The DSS attempted to extend Emefiele’s detention by filing an application in a high court of the federal capital territory, which was later withdrawn. The federal government also sought to appeal against his bail grant, culminating in a complex legal saga.
Notably, on August 15, the federal government orally moved to withdraw the “illegal possession of firearms” charge against Emefiele, adding another layer to the ongoing legal drama surrounding the suspended CBN Governor.
