Members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives have pledged N705 million from their salaries to support the humanitarian initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The lawmakers announced that the donation represents a six-month, 50% deduction from their salaries, according to a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, on Monday, March 17, 2025.
The announcement was made during an Iftar dinner hosted by President Tinubu at the New Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he met with House leaders and members in observance of the Ramadan fast.
Lawmakers Pledge Support for Vulnerable Nigerians
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his continued respect and engagement with the legislative arm. He emphasized that the lawmakers’ financial contribution aims to alleviate the struggles of vulnerable Nigerians facing economic hardship.
“On behalf of the House of Representatives, we are donating N705 million, a six-month, 50% deduction from our salaries, to support Mr. President’s humanitarian efforts and assist vulnerable people across the country,” Abbas stated.
The Speaker also urged Nigerians to continue praying for the nation’s economic stability, improved security, and the well-being of its leaders and citizens. He reiterated that all House members stand firmly behind the President, ensuring that government policies remain focused on the welfare of the people and the development of Nigeria.
Presidency Commends Legislative Cooperation
Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima commended the lawmakers for their show of solidarity and urged them to prioritize national unity and development over political rivalry.
“In the end, history will not judge us by the number of personal battles we fought, but by the bridges we built together,” Shettima remarked. “We are gathered here not as adversaries in a contest for power, but as partners in the noble task of nation-building.”
He assured lawmakers that President Tinubu views them as key stewards of democracy and critical voices in Nigeria’s progress.
Shettima also highlighted the improving economic landscape, asserting that the government’s policies are beginning to yield positive results.
“The economy has turned the corner, and we are now on the path to sustained growth. With perseverance, we will create a Nigeria where every citizen can thrive,” he said.
A Call for Responsible Leadership
The Vice President appreciated Speaker Abbas and House leaders for fostering legislative harmony and urged them to govern with empathy, fairness, and justice. He reminded them that their positions are a sacred trust given by the Nigerian people and should be upheld with integrity.
As the Tinubu administration continues implementing reforms, both the executive and legislative arms have emphasized their commitment to working together to ensure national development and social welfare for all Nigerians.
