Lawmakers in the House of Representatives made a bold move on Friday by rejecting the representatives of key government agencies— the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Controller General of Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), and the Executive Director of the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS)— during the 2024 budget defence.
The directive came from the House Committee on Appropriation during the budget defence session, led by Chairman Abubakar Bichi. The rejection of the agency representatives indicates a significant development in the budgetary process.
All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) were summoned to appear before the Committee, but the notable absence of key figures prompted the Committee to take decisive action. The lawmakers specified that the CBN Governor, the Controller General of Customs, and the Executive Director of FIRS must personally appear before the Committee on Monday at 10 am, without any excuses.
This unexpected move suggests a heightened level of scrutiny and demand for accountability in the budgetary process. Lawmakers appear resolute in ensuring direct engagement with top officials to address concerns and queries related to the proposed 2024 budget. The decision to reject representatives underscores the importance placed on a firsthand account and clarification from these crucial agencies regarding their budgetary allocations and plans for the upcoming fiscal year.
As Monday approaches, stakeholders will keenly observe how these top officials respond to the summons and the ensuing discussions in what promises to be a pivotal moment in the budget defence process.
