Nigeria witnessed a spike in COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, recording its highest daily cases in seven months.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control confirmed 1,149 fresh infections for the day, three times higher than the 357 cases confirmed on Tuesday.
Wednesday’s figures also marks the first time the country is reporting more than 1,000 cases in a day since February 19 when 1,492 cases were reported.
According to the NCDC, the cases reported on Wednesday were spread across 15 states and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.
Lagos, the epicentre of the pandemic in the country, had the most infections with 680. Rivers State had 157 infections, Akwa Ibom – 94, Oyo – 56, Edo – 36, FCT – 34, Ogun – 31 and Ekiti – 20.
Other states with fresh cases are Delta – 16, Abia – 5, Nasarawa – 5, Osun – 5, Cross River – 4, Plateau – 3, Sokoto – 2 and Kano – 1.
As of Thursday morning, 184,593 people have been infected with COVID-19 in Nigeria. A total of 2,236 people have died so far, while 167,738 have been treated and discharged.
