The United Kingdom has announced a significant increase in the minimum salary requirement for the Skilled Worker visa route, affecting Nigerians and others seeking employment opportunities in the country. The adjustment, set to take effect from April 4, 2024, will necessitate applicants to secure a minimum salary of £38,700, marking a 47.70% increase from the previous threshold of £26,200.
Home Secretary James Cleverly disclosed the new salary requirement, emphasizing the government’s intent to reduce net annual immigration by 300,000 in the coming years, though specific timelines were not provided. Additionally, the government plans to abolish the 20% pay reduction employers were permitted to offer employees on the shortage occupations list.
However, there are exemptions to the salary increase. Individuals already on the Skilled Worker route at the time of implementation will not be affected, with the changes only impacting new applicants, including those changing employment, extending their stay, or applying for indefinite leave to remain. Furthermore, roles covered by national pay scales, such as teachers, and those under the Health and Care visa route, remain unaffected by the salary hike.
Earlier reports indicated that Nigerians planning to travel to the UK will also face new visa fees. The UK home office announced an increase in visit visa costs, with a visit visa for less than six months now priced at £115, representing a 15% increment from the previous fee.
These developments underscore the UK’s efforts to reform its immigration system and regulate skilled migration. While the salary increase poses challenges for prospective migrants, exemptions offer some relief to certain categories of workers. The changes highlight the evolving landscape of global mobility and its impact on individuals seeking employment opportunities abroad.
