The University of York is introducing a new opportunity for African-based candidates to pursue postgraduate training in health economics. The Thanzi Scholarship Programme will provide fully funded Health Economics Distance Learning (HEDL) MSc Studentships to support individuals currently working on health economics-related issues for ministries of health or public universities in the West African Health Organization (WAHO) and East, Central, and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA) regions. The scholarships cover the MSc program and related travel expenses.
The HEDL program, led by esteemed academics at the University of York, is a three-year Master of Science (MSc) program that specializes in health economics and related disciplines. The program utilizes a virtual learning environment, allowing students to engage in online teaching and learning while continuing their professional work. Additionally, students have access to extensive study resources and support and are part of a learning community that convenes annually for residential workshops at the University of York.
Applicants for the Thanzi Scholarship Programme must fulfill certain requirements. They must be employed in a health-related field within a ministry of health or public university role in the WAHO or ECSA region and consider health economics training vital for their career development. Additionally, applicants must hold an undergraduate degree with a 2:1 or equivalent, demonstrate evidence of English language proficiency (if required), and obtain permission from their employer to dedicate a minimum of one day per week for their studies.
The Thanzi Studentships cover the course fees for the three-year program (£7,990 per year) and travel expenses to attend the annual residential workshop conducted by the program. It’s important to note that the Studentships do not provide stipends, so students are responsible for their own IT equipment, including a laptop and internet access, to fully participate in course activities.
The HEDL course structure spans three years, starting with the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Economics for Health Care Professionals in the first year, followed by the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics for Health Care Professionals in the second year, and concluding with the MSc in Economic Evaluation for Health Technology Assessment in the third year.
Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications for the Thanzi Programme MSc Studentships by June 19, 2023 (09:00 BST). The application process requires completion of an online application form, along with the submission of essential documents, including an undergraduate degree certificate, an English language test certificate (if applicable), a current CV (maximum 2 A4 pages), and a Letter of Support from the employer, confirming the commitment of time (20 hours per week) and necessary support for completing the three-year course.
Applications will be reviewed by regional panels led by the ECSA-HC and WAHO, with shortlisting taking place in June 2023. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit their final applications to the University of York HEDL admissions team by the deadline of July 28, 2023. Successful applicants will be contacted by the University of York, receiving an invitation to commence the program in September 2023.
