The news that the Ukrainian Embassy in Nigeria has announced that Nigerians who volunteer to fight Russian forces in Ukraine must pay $1,000 for a ticket and visa has evoked a variety of comments from Nigerians.
In addition to the money needed for airfare and visas by these volunteers, documentation of military experience, passports, and other items are expected to be presented, according to the Ukrainian embassy, which was besieged by a large number of Nigerians who expressed willingness to join the Ukrainian side.
According to media reports, the $1,000 fee is due to the difficulty in traveling to Ukraine due to the war-related shutdown of the airspace.
He stated that the only option to access Ukraine is to fly through countries that border Ukraine, emphasizing that these nations are members of the European Union (EU), and hence visas are required to visit them.
He claimed that it would be difficult for Nigerians to cross land borders because they needed permits to visit their border nations such as Romania, Poland, and Hungary.
Some Nigerians have expressed dissatisfaction with the cost of travel to Ukraine, claiming that it is prohibitively expensive.
