Another Covid-19 variant “Deltacron” has been detected in Cyprus. The deltacron variant is a combination strain of Covid-19 that fuses the delta and omicron variant. The Delta and Omicron are the two most contagious and dangerous variants of COVID-19, with both having high mutation level in their spike protein.

However, Deltacron is not an official name given to the strain by the global health body – World Health Organization (WHO) and it is still not an officially acknowledged variant.

According to Professor Leondios Kostrikis, Head of Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology at University of Cyprus stated a strain containing a combination of the delta and omicron virus was found in the Deltacron Variant

“There are currently Omicron and Delta co-infections and we found this strain that is a combination of these two. The discovery was named Deltacron due to the identification of Omicron-like genetic signatures within the Delta genome,”.

Furthermore, there is currently no functional data postulating the Deltacron variant is more transmissible than other variants, Current reports suggests 25 mild cases of the variant has been detected in Cyprus. Although, the number one health organization The World Health Organization (WHO) has not made any statement regarding this development . Meanwhile, Cyprus Health Minister Michalis Hadjipandelas has disclosed  the new variant (Deltacron)  is not something to worry about at this moment.
