Binance has put the impact of a major security breach at roughly $6.3 billion, with about $3 billion in digital assets frozen so far, while it works to contain the incident and restore services.
The world’s largest crypto exchange said it will make customers whole using its Secure Asset Fund for Users and its own balance sheet. Deposits and withdrawals were paused as investigators and partners chased the funds. Bitcoin dropped more than 4% to under $78,000 on Friday as the news unsettled crypto markets.
How the Breach May Have Happened
Binance’s early findings suggest a DevOps engineer’s laptop was compromised. That access, the exchange said, may have let an attacker reach a service container and push through unauthorised withdrawals.
Co-founder Yi He said deposits were not hit and kept running as normal. The company is tightening its withdrawal systems and address controls and aims to start turning withdrawals back on within about **48 hours**. Binance said it had seen no sign of a private key leak and would issue a full technical report and an updated Proof of Reserves after the clean-up.
On X, the exchange also said Binance Alpha trading had been halted and that verified frozen funds stood at about $2.54 billion at one stage of the response. A spokesperson repeated that user funds were safe and that teams were investigating.
Stablecoin Issuers Lock Billions
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said more than $800 million in USDC tied to the incident had been frozen. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said Tether had frozen more than $1.5 billion in USDT that may have been linked to the breach. Ripple’s Jack McDonald said affected RLUSD balances were being frozen as well.
Yi He later credited Ripple with helping stop about $200 million of related flows. Circle’s shares fell around 5% in after-hours trade on Thursday.
Markets and On-Chain Trail
Bitcoin slid more than 4% to about $77,995. Analytics firm Arkham Intelligence tied nearly $6 billion in assets bitcoin, ether, solana and stablecoins among them to 55 wallets linked to the possible exploit.
Large hacks remain a recurring risk in crypto. Bybit lost about $1.5 billion in 2025; Bitget more recently saw more than $350 million stolen. Decentralised platforms have also been drained of billions over recent years.
Impact on Users
For Binance customers, including many in Nigeria, the near-term problem is access. Suspended deposits and withdrawals can leave balances locked until services return. The rapid freezes by stablecoin issuers show how quickly funds can be trapped when a breach is flagged helpful for recovery, disruptive for anyone whose assets are caught up in the response.
Binance’s promise to cover losses is meant to reassure users. Confidence will depend on how much is recovered, how fast withdrawals resume, and what the final technical post-mortem reveals.
