The Nigerian government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, announced a N1.85 billion initiative to support the education and rehabilitation of the rescued Chibok girls through 2027. This program aims to provide comprehensive care for 108 girls currently under government support, with 68 enrolled at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola.
Program Details
The Federal Ministry of Education outlined that the Chibok Girls Intervention Programme covers a range of services, including tuition, accommodation, vocational training, psychosocial support, medical care, and child and parental assistance. The government will continue to fund the girls’ education at AUN, ensuring their tuition, housing, and related expenses are fully covered.
Financial Breakdown
The total budget of N1,854,277,768 is allocated as follows:
Tuition for 2024/25 Academic Year: N389,666,928 for 68 girls, at N5,730,396 per student.
Tuition for 2025–2027: N515,735,640 for 30 girls, covering three years at N5,730,396 per student annually.
Vocational Training and Starter Packs: N150,000,000 for 30 AUN students and N195,000,000 for 39 girls (including one graduate), each receiving N5,000,000.
Accommodation and Feeding: N117,000,000 for 39 girls during six months of vocational training, at N500,000 per person.
Rent Allowance: N16,200,000 for nine girls in Adamawa, at N600,000 each for three years.
Child Support: N22,680,000 for nine girls, at N70,000 per month for 36 months.
Parental Support: N165,600,000 for 276 girls, at N200,000 each for three years.
Medical and Surgical Support: N3,680,000 for one girl, plus N900,000 for travel and logistics and N5,000,000 for pre- and post-surgery support.
NHIS Enrollment: N2,815,200 for 68 girls, at N1,150 each for 36 months.
Monitoring and Evaluation: N120,000,000 for tracking academic progress over three years.
Essentials: N150,000,000 for food, toiletries, sanitary items, and other necessities over three years.

The Ministry emphasized that this initiative is more than a financial commitment—it symbolizes Nigeria’s dedication to transforming a tragic chapter into one of hope and empowerment. Despite political challenges, including criticisms from AUN’s proprietor, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, President Tinubu has prioritized the girls’ education and well-being.
