Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on Telegram

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the operating licenses of several microfinance banks, finance companies, and primary mortgage banks in the country. The decision, which was made under the powers conferred on the CBN by the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020, Act No. 5, comes as a result of various violations and non-compliance by the affected institutions.

The revocation, announced on the 22nd of May, 2023, by Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, cites multiple reasons for the action. According to the published report, the affected banks and financial institutions have either ceased operations in Nigeria for a continuous period of six months, failed to fulfill or comply with the conditions under which their licenses were granted, or neglected to meet their obligations as imposed by the CBN.

Also, the licenses of finance companies,l HHL Invest & Trust Limited, TFS Finance Limited, and Treasures & Trust Limited were also revoked. In addition, four primary mortgage banks, including Resort Savings & Loans and Safetrust Mortgage Bank, had their licenses revoked.

The revocation of these licenses is a significant move by the CBN to maintain the integrity and stability of Nigeria’s financial sector. The CBN has emphasized the importance of adherence to regulations and obligations imposed by the central bank, highlighting that failure to comply can have severe consequences for financial institutions.

The action taken by the CBN serves as a reminder to all financial institutions in Nigeria to uphold the standards and requirements set forth by the regulatory authorities. It also underscores the commitment of the CBN to protect the interests of depositors and maintain the overall health of the country’s banking system.

Affected institutions are now required to cease all operations and are prohibited from carrying on any business for which their licenses were issued. Customers and stakeholders of the revoked institutions are advised to contact the CBN or relevant authorities for further guidance and assistance.

The revocation of these licenses is expected to have a significant impact on the affected institutions, their employees, and their customers. The CBN, however, remains committed to fostering a robust and well-regulated financial sector that promotes economic growth and stability in Nigeria.

As the banking industry adjusts to these developments, stakeholders will be closely watching how the CBN and other regulatory bodies continue to strengthen the sector and ensure compliance with regulations, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more resilient financial system in Nigeria.
