The Nigerian equities market extended its decline on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, as heavy selling in consumer goods stocks erased approximately N1.76 trillion from market capitalisation.

Market capitalisation fell to N157.49 trillion from N159.26 trillion as investors continued to lock in gains following Monday’s record close. The index has now retreated about 4,563 points from its recent peak of 248,529.75 points.

Consumer Goods Drive the Losses
The NGX Consumer Goods Index recorded the steepest sector decline, plunging 4.93 per cent to 4,106.48 points from 4,319.51 points. BUA Foods lost N84.50 per share, while Unilever Nigeria shed N14.55. UAC Nigeria also fell 2.86 per cent to N170.00.
Profit-taking extended to banking heavyweights. Access Holdings declined 3.01 per cent to N27.40, UBA fell 2.15 per cent to N45.45, Zenith Bank eased 1.34 per cent to N124.80 and GTCO slipped 0.23 per cent to N128.50.
A few large-cap names resisted the broader pressure. ETI advanced 9.93 per cent to N71.40, adding N6.45 per share. Nestlé Nigeria rose 1.82 per cent to N2,800, Nigerian Breweries gained 0.71 per cent to N70.50 and Transcorp climbed 1.20 per cent to N38.00.
Sector Performance
Beyond the sharp drop in Consumer Goods, the Banking Index declined 0.30 per cent to 2,560.67 points and the Industrial Index fell 0.42 per cent to 10,457.71 points. Insurance provided the strongest support, rising 0.71 per cent to 1,152.13 points. Oil & Gas edged up 0.02 per cent to 5,238.56 points, while the Commodity Index closed unchanged at 1,743.53 points.
Market Context
Wednesday’s session marked the second consecutive day of losses after Monday’s record close. The concentration of heavy declines in stocks such as BUA Foods and Unilever points more to large-cap profit-taking than a broad-based sell-off.
The near-term direction of the market will depend on whether selling pressure in consumer goods and banking stocks continues or whether investors return to the large-cap names that powered the earlier rally.
