The name of Facebook Inc has officially been changed to Meta, This was announced by the CEO of Facebook on Thursday at the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference. Meta will be a rebranding that focuses on building a virtual reality that will be a successor to the regular mobile internet.
The world’s largest social media company has been battling denunciation from lawmakers and users over protection of its user’s data, as well as the market power the firm possesses.
Mark Zuckerberg, emphasized that Facebook’s mission still remains the same, which is centered around connecting people together. He further explained that all products and apps will never change.
In his words, “All of our products, including our apps, now share a new vision: to help bring the metaverse to life. And now we have a name that reflects the breadth of what we do.
“Right now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything that we’re doing today, let alone in the future,” Zuckerberg said.
The metaverse is a term coined in the dystopian novel “Snow Crash” three decades ago and now attracting buzz in Silicon Valley. It refers broadly to the idea of a shared virtual realm which can be accessed by people using different devices.
The tech giant, which reports about 2.9 billion monthly users, has faced increasing scrutiny in recent years from global lawmakers and regulators.
Facebook has invested heavily in augmented and virtual reality. Thus, the change would bring together its different apps and technologies under one new brand. However, The change does not apply to its individual platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, only the parent company that owns them.
