The average retail price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) in Nigeria increased significantly to ₦1,532.93 per litre in April 2026, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Friday.
This represents an 18.97% rise compared to ₦1,288.54 recorded in March 2026. On a year-on-year basis, the price went up by 23.69% from ₦1,239.33 in April 2025.
Highest and Lowest Prices by State
Yobe State recorded the highest average petrol price at ₦1,599.05 per litre, followed by Edo State (₦1,595.74) and Bauchi (₦1,589.07). The lowest prices were seen in Niger State at ₦1,403.89, Sokoto (₦1,404.16), and Katsina (₦1,406.28).
At the regional level, the South-South zone had the most expensive petrol at an average of ₦1,566.76 per litre, while the North-West recorded the lowest average at ₦1,508.81.
Diesel Prices Jump Dramatically
The price of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) also witnessed a steep increase, rising by 50.16% from ₦1,648.06 in March to ₦2,474.69 per litre in April 2026.
Year-on-year, diesel prices climbed 43.67% from ₦1,722.45 recorded in April 2025.
Nasarawa State had the highest diesel price at ₦2,818.94 per litre, followed by Ebonyi (₦2,754.06) and Taraba (₦2,704.76). The lowest prices were recorded in Kebbi (₦2,180.28), Kogi (₦2,192.70), and Katsina (₦2,269.14).
Regionally, the North-East posted the highest average diesel price at ₦2,603 per litre, while the North-West had the cheapest at ₦2,409.34.
The latest NBS report highlights the persistent upward pressure on fuel prices and the wide variations across states, which continue to impact transportation costs, business operations, and household expenses across the country.
