The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has firmly debunked a viral infographic claiming that the Federal Government has introduced a new tax on vehicles, scheduled to take effect from July 1, 2026.
In a statement issued on Monday, the service described the circulating material as false and misleading. The infographic reportedly instructed owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles to pay an unspecified vehicle tax either online or through designated banks and agencies.
Mr Dare Adekambi, Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman, Dr Zacch Adedeji, and official spokesperson for the service, clarified that no such new tax has been introduced by the Federal Government.
He pointed out several inaccuracies in the viral content, including a wrong link directing people to http://www.firs.gov.ng instead of the correct official website of the Nigeria Revenue Service, which is http://www.nrs.gov.ng. The material also lacked any identifiable author or official source.
“The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the service or any government agency,” Adekambi said.
The spokesperson urged members of the public to disregard the fabricated message and rely solely on information disseminated through verified official channels of the government or its agencies. He warned against trusting anonymous graphics and unverified claims circulating on social media.
Adekambi advised Nigerians to consult only the official website of the NRS and its verified social media handles for accurate and up-to-date information on tax matters and other activities of the service.
The clarification comes amid growing concerns over the spread of misleading information online, which often aims to create confusion or exploit citizens. The NRS reiterated its commitment to transparency and encouraged the public to remain vigilant against such deceptive materials.
No new vehicle tax has been introduced, and citizens should ignore any claims suggesting otherwise.
