Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali, has pledged his commitment to laying the groundwork for a successful electric vehicle (EV) rollout in the country. His goal is to address the soaring transportation costs faced by Nigerians, attributed in part to the removal of fuel subsidies. Alkali made these remarks upon resuming office on August 22, emphasizing the need for an effective mass transit system and the procurement of electric vehicles to alleviate transportation expenses.

Alkali stated, “The Ministry of Transport must assume a leading role in improving the public transportation sector to support the numerous policies that are geared towards providing democratic dividends that are accessible to ordinary Nigerians through effective provision of public transport that is secured, affordable, and convenient across the country.”

The new Minister of Transportation’s vision aligns with Nigeria’s broader objective of reducing emissions and embracing sustainable transportation solutions. In 2022, Jelani Aliyu, Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), highlighted the potential of electric vehicles to accelerate Nigeria’s emission reduction targets. He emphasized that EVs offer opportunities for young ICT-skilled Nigerians to contribute to technological advancements.

Addressing the electricity challenge, Aliyu revealed that the NADDC had developed 100% solar-powered, off-grid EV charging stations in key cities. This initiative aims to tackle the charging infrastructure hurdle that often accompanies EV adoption.

Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable transportation is part of a broader strategy to harness local expertise and innovation. Notably, the Federal Government, under former President Muhammadu Buhari, announced plans in May 2023 to produce 30% locally made electric vehicles by 2033. This initiative signifies a pivotal step toward reducing dependency on fossil fuels and embracing cleaner and more cost-effective transportation solutions.

With Alkali’s determination to foster an effective mass transit system and promote electric vehicle adoption, Nigeria embarks on a transformative journey towards a greener and more affordable transportation landscape.
