WhatsApp has revealed plans to drop support for older versions of Apple’s iOS operating system, effective November 30, 2026.
From that date, the messaging app will only function on devices running iOS 15.5 or later. This change will impact millions of users worldwide, including many in Nigeria still relying on older iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.
The update also extends to WhatsApp Business users. Devices operating on iOS 15.0, 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, or 15.4 will lose access to the app unless users upgrade their software before the deadline.
Notifications Already Rolling Out
WhatsApp has started sending in-app notifications to affected users, advising them to update their devices promptly. The company explained that maintaining compatibility with outdated software slows down the delivery of new features and important security patches.
Most Users Can Update Without New Hardware
The majority of affected users will not need to buy new devices. Since iOS 15.5 is a minor software update, most iPhones and iPads already running iOS 15 can simply install the latest version via Settings > General > Software Update.
According to WhatsApp, the decision aims to enhance overall app performance, security, and reliability, as many modern features require technologies only available in newer Apple operating systems.
Business Users Encouraged to Act Fast
Small businesses and entrepreneurs who use WhatsApp Business for customer communication and sales transactions have been urged to update early to prevent any disruption to their operations. WhatsApp also indicated that it will phase out support for some older Android smartphones later this year as part of its broader strategy to focus on newer operating systems and strengthen platform security.
Users are recommended to check their device compatibility immediately and install available updates to ensure continued access to the messaging service.
